Martin Westbeek

Martin Westbeek is a marketing communications lecturer living in Holland. He has fished since age 12, but took a break in the seventies, got back into the swing in the eighties, wondering why he ever took that break in the first place, and determined to make up for lost time.

His home water is the typical Dutch lowland "polder" Wilnis, but what Martin likes best is fishing for trout in streams or lakes, in fresh and saltwater. Tying has become as much a passion for him as fishing, and Martin is a regular tyer at shows and fairs in Holland, Germany, Denmark and Britain, and also tied in the USA.

Loves: the best quality hackle, his LAW vise, tying technique

Pet peeves: good stuff going out of fashion, having to resort to reading glasses, gas and hook prices

Mart's Bibio

A nice thing about this Bibio is that it's versatile. Play with it, use lighter of heavier hooks, fish it with or without floatant, wrap a thinner or denser hackle, and so on. But make sure you have some Bibios in your flybox spring suddenly is here.

Mart's Parachute Ant

During the warmer months of the year, they are just about anywhere... Ants. Martin Westbeek shows an easy way to tie a good ant imitation that will sit well on the surface and hopefully lure trout or grayling.

Mart's CdL Hen Caddis Emerger

Martin Westbeek's Coq de Leon Hen Caddis Emerger has soft contours and soft materials that suggest the movements of an insect struggling to break free.

Mart's Peccary Paraloop Emerger

This emerger is great for smaller, slower streams and has proven a very successful pattern for the author. It's tied the paraloop way with no hackle under the hook.

Taming the Humpy

The Humpy might be the greatest surface fly ever devised, but it also has a reputation of being difficult to tie. Learn to tame it here.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
